Description
The first C-141 Starlifter assigned to Travis AFB, "The Golden Bear" was named in honor of California ("The Golden State" with a Bear on the flag). "Golden Bear" served from 1965 through 1996 and was involved in many historic events. It was deployed as far afield as Antarctica for "Operation Deep Freeze" and served a major role in repatriating U.S. P.O.W.s at the end of the Vietnam War. This artwork represents "Golden Bear" early in her career, circa 1965 flying over the golden hills of coastal California not far from her base. Art created for the Headquarters collection of the 60th Air Mobility Wing at Travis AFB and the Travis Heritage Center (which retains "Golden Bear" on static display near the on-base museum.)
