Description
B-29MR of the 99th BW in which General Travis was killed when it crashed just after takeoff from Fairfield-Suisun AFB on August 5,1950. The aircraft was heading with the group to forward staging bases to provide the nuclear threat to keep the worsening situation in the Korean War in check. As such, the aircraft pictured was carrying the shell of a nuclear bomb (with no plutonium) when it crashed; the resultant fire caused the bomb explosives to detonate, creating a huge blast that eventually claimed 19 lives. The Air Force Base was subsequently named Travis AFB in honor of the General. No photographs of the aircraft before the crash are known to exist so this illustration was created from best guess material.
