Description
The F4F Wildcat was the premier US Navy fighter at the beginning of the war. Wildcats could take punishment that their more nimble and lighter foes (mainly Zeroes) couldn't, and tactics could be used that brough the Wildcat out on top in battle more often than not.
Early in the war, with the nation and the Navy still reeling from the series of disasters that started at Pearl Harbor, a task force centered around the USS Lexington approached the Japanese bastion of Rabaul. During this action, Butch O'Hare and his wingman found themselves the only aircraft available when a flight of "Betty" bombers approached the Lexington. His wingman's guns inoperative and his ammunition depleted, O'Hare intercepted the bombers and was credited with shooting down five to become the Navy's first ace - and first Medal of Honor winner - of World War II.
