Artist's Description
Col. Al Whitley took over command of the 37th TFW with its cutting edge equipment, the F-117 Nighthawk "Stealth Fighter" two days before the whole group was relocated to Saudi Arabia in response to Saddam Hussein's Iraqi invasion of its neighbor, Kuwait, in the summer of 1990. Under his leadership the wing adapted the moniker "Team Stealth", and were honed to a fine edge by the time hostilities began.
When Operation Desert Shield became Desert Storm in January of 1991, Whitley was one of the first pilots over Baghdad, in the then-unproven stealth aircraft. Though the Iraqi defenses threw everything they could at the handful of F-117s, they were inevitably firing blind. As impressive as the "Fireworks show" of anti-aircraft gunfire and missiles was, no stealth fighter was even dinged by a stray shot (though shells returning to Earth did a great deal of the damage reported by the eager news media in populated civilian areas. What a dream commisioned officer/pilot Walter Chamberlain. I was stationed in Luke AFB in 1992 as a young airman. My father a type a crushed my dream of being a pilot or WSO in the USAF. From child hood he said, "You will be md or attorney." In a different family, I wonder what could have been. I was only one of two airman that scored honors on air force manual at Lackland. I was the little guy that was always running last. My time with the 56th Fighter Wing was the best time of my life second to becoming a Christian at the base. All F-16 pilots and F-15E officers where really humble and stellar. I did watch out for general Plummer in that nasty blue dodge with one star but never saw it. lol

Small World. I crewed "Unexpected Guest" during the war. I was also responsible for putting the mission marks on the canopy rail. Nice way of showing our door art. Red Section put them on the forward portion and we the aft.
