Artist's Description
This image depicts a "fantasy" collection of aircraft flown by the U.S. Navy Squadron VF-111, known as the "Sundowners". Beginning its life as a squadron in the dark days of World War II, VF-11 adopted the nickname of "Sundowners", refering to the Japanese Naval battle flag depicted as a rising sun. Here are the most recent aircraft flown by VF-111: The F-4 Phantom here was a MiG killer, shooting down a North Vietnamese MiG 17 during the Vietnam War; The F-14 Tomcat was the main naval fighter during the 1980s and 1990s, with the markings here presenting one of the group's most popular aircraft (due to the nose art); and in the foreground is an F-5N Tiger dissimilar combat training aircraft, from the squadron as it is now designated (VFC-111).
